This course provides comprehensive practice in reading and writing skills necessary for success in college-level courses. Students need a "C" or better in this course to enroll in ENGL1106, College Composition I. (Prerequisites: none) (5 hrs lec/0 hrs lab/0 hrs OJT)

ENGL 0085 - Intermediate Reading & Writing - 3 credits

This course is designed for students with Accuplacer Reading scores between 200-224, assessed prior to the current semester's add-drop date. The course covers: vocabulary development, recognizing main ideas and supporting details, writing grammatically correct sentences, understanding and identifying relationships, learning to make reasonable inferences, and demonstrating paragraph-level writing skills in response to assigned reading and other topics. Students who complete ENGL 0085 with a C or better or with departmental approval are eligible to enroll in ENGL 0095. Students who earn an A or B by the end of the course are eligible to retake the Accuplacer and advance to ENGL 1111 with a score of 250 or higher. Prerequisites: None.
