- Online Course
- 1st half of fall semester. Restricted to students in the MN18 Online program. Rhetoricians study the power of language to influence others and construct our world. In this course, we will trace the ways in which both the use of language and the understanding of its complexities have changed over time in the western world. We will focus in particular on the arguments posed in each era, beginning with ancient Greece and continuing through medieval times, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and the Modern and contemporary eras. At each point, we will raise questions about how earlier ideas relate to our use of language now. We will also discuss concrete ways in which we can apply older ideas and strategies to communicate more effectively in the 21st century. Finally, we will also explore ways in which technology and other social changes compel us to ask new questions, and challenge us to continually reexamine our answers.
